The fifth and probably final beta version of NFS World Online went live June 1st and lasts until midnight June 13th. The official game launch is scheduled for July 20th this year. Electronic Arts aimed to have 150,000 participants in this fifth beta test.

According to the Twitter account for Criterion Games, it seems that the current Need For Speed project that they are developing will be revealed at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles taking place June 15-17, 2010. With over a year of development and rumors of screenshots coming soon, we can expect great news soon.

This past weekend, the fourth beta of NFS World online was conducted by Electronic Arts. Significant changes have been made including a new SpeedBoost feature which is the virtual currency in Need for Speed World and is used to make purchases of digital content for your account. SpeedBoost can be redeemed on world.needforspeed.com and in game.

Need For Speed World Online’s third beta took place from April 7th at 16:00 GMT until April 14th, 08:00 GMT. Improved gameplay and features have been added, and will help detect issues and open the door to a fourth beta. Anyone involved in any of the first three betas will have access to this and any future ones.

I received my invite to the second Need For Speed World beta and got a short-time hands-on with it. The game feels Need For Speed. I don’t know if I can post screenshots or video yet. I will check the NDA before doing so.

Just today Electronic Arts opened the applications for Need For Speed World’s second closed beta, go apply now!
The second beta will begin on Friday, March 19th @ 4pm (GMT) and will end Monday, March 22nd @ 7am (GMT). The second closed beta will feature almost twice the number of racers as the first had so there will be plenty of competition this time around!
Note: If you were selected to participate in the first closed beta (“CB1″), you will be invited to participate in the second closed beta (“CB2″). Be sure to watch your email for the beta invitation.

Apparantly there are two more NFS titles in the works, which are planned to be released in Q4 2010 and Q1 2011.
The rumor is that this year’s Need For Speed title will be the third from the Hot Pursuit series, possibly a remake of the classic NFS3 Hot Pursuit from 1998 (the first of the series to have cop cars chasing you). According to the name, we should expect the return of police pursuits. If we previous rumors are true, this might be the title Criterion Games is working on, who are the creators of the successful Burnout-series.
The second game is planned for release in the 1st quarter in 2011. As it seems, it’ll be a successor of NFS Shift and possibly carry the name Need For Speed Shift 2. Given the success of NFS Shift this seems to be a logical step from Electronic Arts.

Electronic Arts has just completed a beta program of the coming NFS World Online game in the series over the weekend. The beta version of Need for Speed World Online is a work in progress and intended to help our development team in creating the best game possible. The Team Racing Pack downloadable content for Need for Speed Shift includes five new cars: 1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV, 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, 1967 Shelby GT500, 1969 Dodge Charger R/T and 1969 Dodge Challenger R/T, as well as the new Team Racing mode.
It’s time to make your choice: red or blue, and this time, it has nothing to do with politics. With the new Team Racing Pack for Need for Speed Shift, you can join your friends and fight for the right to be called king of the track.
